Taupo & Ruapehu Region
The Lake Taupo and Ruapehu region is situated in the central North Island of New Zealand. The region is a centre of volcanic and geothermal activity with hot springs and the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park.Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake, is famous for its trout fishing and boating. Other Taupo adventure activities include bungy jumping, skydiving, rafting, mountain biking, jet boating and kayaking. The famous Huka Falls are nearby as is the top rated Wairakei International golf course.
At the heart of Tongariro National Park are the active volcanic mountains, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Mt Ruapehu is home to the Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of the best one day treks in New Zealand.
