Wanaka Area

Lake Wanaka in the heart of the Southern Lakes region of the South Island is one of New Zealand's most popular year round holiday resorts. Wanaka and Hawea are two of the most beautiful lakes in New Zealand.

Surrounded by stunning mountains including Mount Aspiring National Park, the lakes and rivers in the area offer excellent boating, fishing, kayaking and swimming.

Historically a gold mining town, the Wanaka area is now renowned for its high country farming, wineries and wide range of outdoor activities. It is a key winter sports destination with world class ski fields, heli-skiing and nordic skiing and a lively restaurant and café scene.

'Warbirds Over Wanaka' held every two years is classed as one of the best warbird shows in the world and World War II fighter aircraft can be seen at the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum.
