Central Otago Region
The Central Otago region, New Zealand's most inland and driest region in the centre of the South Island, is a place of dramatic scenery with its wide open plains, strange rock formations, golden tussock covered hills and clear light. It was the scene of a gold rush in the 1860s with many mining relics still visible at historic villages like St Bathans. These days Central Otago is known for its wines, especially Pinot Noir, delicious stone fruit and myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities.
The Otago Central Rail Trail, once a bustling railway line, is now a 150km path for cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Adventure seekers can also kayak down rivers, try ice skating & curling in winter, jet boating, enjoy excellent fishing and hunting.
