The Ultimate Triathlon One of the biggest international sporting events held each year in New Zealand, Ironman New Zealand combines a 3.8 km lake swim and a 179.2 km cycle with a full 42.2 km marathon. Over 1200 competitors from 40 countries take part each year. Starting at 7am in Taupo athletes begin their challenge to complete the course by midnight with an additional incentive of grabbing one of the qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Other Pre-Race Events Taupo is a small town with incredible tourism infrastructure and community support that make the week before the event a great experience. Pre-race events include the 4.2km Cross the Lake Swim, Wetsuit Swims, Splash & Dash, Fun Runs & Walks, Sports Expo and Massage service. Things to Do Lake Taupo offers an incredible variety of activities so all the family can enjoy their Ironman experience. Walk along the lake shore and stop at a nearby hot spring feeding into the lake, and jump in. Bungy Jump and take a ride on the Huka Jet to the mighty Huka Falls. Enjoy a round of golf at the Wairakei International Golf Course or world famous trout fishing. Transport and Accommodation Lake Taupo is an easy 3-4 hours drive south of Auckland. There are regular flights and bus services from around New Zealand. Accommodation during this event will be keenly sought after, so early booking is recommended.
