Eastland Region

The Eastland region (or East Cape) is situated on the sunny northeastern corner of the North Island of New Zealand. Eastland is where the first Polynesian migration canoes landed, where Captain Cook made his first landfall and the first place in the world to see the sun each day.

The region is sparsely populated with many small settlements, an untamed, wild landscape, secluded beaches perfect for swimming and surfing, hot springs and forest covered hills. Maori culture and language is still visible in the day to day activities of the people here with carved meeting houses, churches, Maori art and crafts.

Eastland offers a wide range of soft adventure activities - surfing, safe swimming, white water rafting, horse trekking, jet boating, bush walks, deep sea fishing, golf and diving.

Lake Waikaremoana, is the centrepiece of the Te Urewera National Park, with its dense native forest and outdoor opportunities, including kayaking, fishing, hunting and hiking trails.

The largest city is Gisborne, one of the sunniest places in New Zealand and known as the 'Chardonnay Capital'. Gisborne has award winning wineries, museums, art galleries, fine dining, excellent beaches, walks and gardens.
