Southland Region

The Southland region lies in the deep south of New Zealand's South Island - a region celebrated for its spectacular lush, green scenery, unique wildlife and rich heritage. Its 'off the beaten track' activities and attractions include brown trout fishing on the Mataura River, hiking the Hump Ridge Track, Hokonui Moonshine Museum and Kingston Flyer vintage steam train.

The main city in Southland is Invercargill with its fine gardens and parks and the largest collection of live tuatara at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery. Nearby is the fishing port of Bluff, home to the famous Bluff Oyster Festival and departure point for the ferry to Stewart Island.

Stewart Island & Rakiura National Park offers a special experience of a slower, simpler lifestyle in a natural world of bush and beach. Enjoy encounters with wildlife and native birds including the kiwi, walking, boating, diving and fishing or just relax.

The Catlins coast also offers enthralling wildlife experiences as well as beaches, waterfalls, forest walks and farmland scenery.
